DESCRIPTION:
LPW - Waltham, P.S. Bartlett, 13J, 10S, 14K gold (tested) original R&A (Robbins & Appleton) HC with superb front engraving detail of an eagle with outstretched wings perched atop a shield and below a banner of stars, rear with name engraved to shield, engraved pendant and bow, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gold balance wheel, gilt mvt, s#159128. Comes as pictured with a 3.5 inch gold-filled chain and an attractive gold-filled key with faceted purple stone at its top. Gross weight of assembled watch 41.6 dwt (64.7 g). This watch is from a production run listed in Waltham factory records as having been made between March and June of 1865, a time period which overlaps with the closing events of the American Civil War. With its magnificent eagle imagery this piece embodies a strong American patriotism even though it was made during a time of great suffering and sorrow.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, darkened gilt tone, scattered spotting of gilt surfaces; visible portion of dial with two fractures within seconds-register with one having a bit of white paste evident presumably to stabilize it; fine hands, hour is an original polished spade style, replacement minute has had it spade sanded to approximate a similar appearance; case shows little wear, few small nicks to exterior, cuvette with a ding and few nicks, engine turning detail with some reduction at shoulders, excellent engraving detail, case front and rear open a bit short of 90 degrees (to approximately 85 degrees each); tight bow, push shows light wear; glass crystal with some glue excess at its seat. Chain is excellent showing light wear. Key shows ample wear yet remains attractive.
